15. Recitation “My Mother, she Knows”” MILLAR BUZZARD

(“My Mother, she Knows”” may have been written by Millar as a search for this piece proved fruitless.)

(Millar lost the debate on “Summer v. Winter”, 8 votes to 5, but it would be hard to convince an audience that a wet, windy cold winter would be better than a summers day when children could play outside and not feel the cold!)

The Christian Union was founded to foster an interest, in students, of missionary work and to build up good Christian character. Millar was on the Missionary and Business Committees to further the aims of the Union. They raised £9 0s 7d to support the “Native Teacher in India”.

And in the prizes awarded to students in their form, Millar gained a first place for writing, bookkeeping and shorthand.

Millar is mentioned again in the 1904 Speech Day Programme as being involved in the Christian Union for part of the school year. He was not on the Missionary Department Committee, as he was in 1903, just the Business Committee. He may have been aware that he was to leave the school in 1904 and relinquished some of his committee work.

Millar’s name is on the Caulfield Grammar Schools World War 1, 1914 – 1918, Active Service Board. The school advised that as he was on the honour board, he probably kept in touch with the school after his military service.
